MOUNT KILIMANJARO PORTERS SOCIETY JOINS ZARA TANZANIA ADVENTURES IN PASUA ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP

The Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society (MKPS) proudly joined Zara Tanzania Adventures and Zara Tanzania Charity in today’s environmental clean-up exercise held in the Pasua area of Moshi, where Zara Tanzania Adventures’ head office is located.

As one of the key partners in promoting sustainable tourism and environmental responsibility, MKPS gladly accepted the invitation from Zara Tanzania Adventures to take part in this important community activity. The porters expressed their happiness and enthusiasm in being part of the initiative, emphasizing that protecting the environment is not only a duty but also part of their daily work ethic as mountain guides and conservation ambassadors.

Speaking during the event, representatives from MKPS said they are “ready, willing, and able to protect and preserve the environment that gives them their livelihood.” They highlighted that their role on Mount Kilimanjaro extends beyond guiding climbers it includes ensuring that Tanzania’s natural heritage remains clean, safe, and sustainable for generations to come.

The long-standing partnership between Zara Tanzania Adventures and the Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society has created secure employment opportunities for hundreds of porters and has set a benchmark for ethical practices in the climbing industry. Zara Tanzania Adventures has been instrumental in ensuring that all porters under MKPS enjoy fair wages, reasonable load weights, nutritious meals, proper climbing gear, health insurance, and seasonal training programs that enhance safety and professionalism.

However, MKPS remains an independent organization, established to advocate for the rights, welfare, and development of porters working on Mount Kilimanjaro and other trekking routes. Zara Tanzania Adventures stands as one of MKPS’s most reliable partners and supporters, providing employment opportunities and sponsoring several welfare programs, but MKPS independently manages its operations, standards, and advocacy programs to ensure fairness and representation for all porters across the region.

Today’s clean-up served as a strong reminder that sustainability and community well-being go hand in hand. The participation of MKPS members reflects their commitment not only to serving climbers but also to caring for the environment that sustains their work.

As one of the representatives concluded, “We climb, we carry, and we protect because the mountain and the environment are our home.”

Together with Zara Tanzania Adventures and Zara Tanzania Charity, MKPS continues to champion responsible tourism, environmental protection, and the empowerment of porters across Tanzania.
